Albanian road code Article 187: what to do in case of an accident
Article 187 of the Albanian Road Code sets out what people involved in a road accident must do and fines a driver who fails to stop.

Core duties (paragraphs 1 to 4)
- a road user must stop and ensure the necessary help for injured people when the accident is in any way connected with their behaviour (paragraph 1);
- take measures to protect traffic safety and keep evidence and traces useful for establishing responsibility unchanged (paragraph 2);
- if there is only material damage, avoid obstructing traffic where possible (paragraph 3);
- the driver who caused the accident, if there is no other transport and they are able to, takes the injured to the nearest medical centre and returns to the scene immediately; in any case, drivers give the injured their personal details and other information useful for compensation or, if they are not present, communicate it to them by any possible means (paragraph 4).
Damage only: amicable report or police
If there is only material damage, those involved avoid obstructing traffic where possible, notify their insurers where possible, and draw up a joint report (the "amicable report") under the compulsory insurance law, which they submit to the insurers (paragraph 5). If only vehicles are damaged and the parties do not agree on such a report, they must notify the State Police (Policia e Shtetit) and the insurers (paragraph 6). If the road or other property is also damaged, the police and insurers are notified in every case (paragraph 7).
Fine under Article 187 (paragraph 8)
Anyone who, in the situations of paragraphs 5, 6 and 7, does not respect the duty to stop after an accident with only property damage or with injury to persons, where this is not a criminal offence, pays 10,000 to 15,000 lek and has licence points deducted.
